Review: Changeling Moon by Dani Harper

What a thoroughly enjoyable read!

It’s not often that I find myself completely content at the conclusion of a reading adventure but with Changeling Moon, book 1 of Harper’s Changeling series, that is exactly the best way to describe how I felt! No questions were left unanswered, no endearments left unsaid.  And, to top it all off, Connor and Zoey make such a perfect pair! Woot Woot! This match up is the stuff dreams are made of!

Zoey thought she left all the violence and drama of the big city behind. Never did she think her telepathic talents would be put to the test in a little “no where, nothing special” town like Dunvegan ….Yeah, right! Hunted by a rouge werewolf, unknowingly protected by the pack and smack dab in the middle of a whirlwind romance in the making, Zoey is one hell of a gutsy gal!  But, can she overcome her frustrations at a dreadfully unreliable and lack-luster ability she’d rather have left in the past?  Can she come to terms with the inevitable paranormal discovery of not only Connor’s true identity but her own, as well?

In Changeling Moon, Harper treats readers to a well rounded, full bodied reading adventure which flows with a seemingly effortless consistency just as refreshing and continuous as the Peace River, a setting which later plays a prominent part in this journey. Just like the river, (and contrary to the peace and stability that she came here looking for), the Village of Dunvegan and it’s very own veterinarian extraordinaire, Connor Macleod brings to Zoey’s life a myriad of tumultuous emotions and events.  Stress inducing, mind boggling, nail bitting, temperature rising emotions and encounters which she bravely faces and overcomes with such determination and grace that readers can’t help but like and admire her.

Dani introduces a great cast of characters so real, so believable that the desire to hear “the rest of the story” becomes almost tangible. What’s Jessi and Bill’s story? Will future installments of the series teach us more about the Macleod? Don’t forget, Connor has a couple ‘o brothers just as HOT as he is! Do we get to read Devlin and Culley’s “romantical” adventures? And, let’s not forget about James! He’s probably one hell of a story too! (Psst…check out Changeling Dream!)

Dani Harper has a passion for the paranormal which totally shines through with this amazing new series!

He roams the moonlit wilderness, his every sense and instinct on high alert. Changeling wolf Connor Macleod and his Pack have never feared anything—until the night human Zoey Tyler barely escapes a rogue werewolf’s vicious attack.

“I would love to read more of the Macleod clan!” —Fallen Angel Reviews

As the full moon approaches, Zoey has no idea of the changes that are coming, and only Connor can show her what she is, and help her master the wildness inside. With her initiation into the Pack just days away and a terrifying predator on the loose, the tentative bonds of trust and tenderness are their only weapons against a force red in tooth, claw…and ultimate evil.

Giveaway & Interview: Gerard deMarigny

Howdy folks!  Welcome to the BookShelf! Today, I have the honour of sharing my interview with Gerard deMarigny, author of The Watchman of Ephraim, a political thriller which revolves around the events of 9/11 and more specifically this years 10th anniversary of the event.

Please stay tuned for your chance to win your very own print copy! Details outlined below.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Welcome to the BookShelf Gerard! Thanks for taking the time out of your  busy TWOE ‘PATRIOT’ Blog Tour schedule to stop by!
Hi Kate, thanks for letting me drop by your site and answer some questions!
What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?
Most challenging is easy – turning out the volume of quality writing that's necessary to establish a successful writing career. I'm a student of the teachings of the great, experienced author, Dean Wesley Smith. Dean suggests that fiction writers like me have to turn out 3-4 novel-length works per year, every year, for at least the first five years, in order to firmly establish my writing career and generate a steady income. Of course that doesn't take into account any one of those novels becoming a best-seller, but I don't believe a person should count on things of which he/she has no control. I focus on the things I can control … but it's still a big challenge – especially with all a self-published author has to do … marketing, promoting, website maintenance, social networking … and of course all the other non-writing life/family issues.

Most rewarding aspect for me is … I'm living my dream doing what I love. I live for challenges like self-publishing too! I love the feeling of utilizing all the humble gifts that I think I was blessed with by the One above – my creative abilities, life experiences, love for reading, formal education, IT skills, etc. all come to bear in self-publishing.
Can you give us a “non-spoilery” description of your story?
The Watchman of Ephraim tells the story of Cris De Niro, a self-made billionaire who came from the hard streets of Brooklyn, NY, only to become one of the youngest and brightest hedge fund managers in the world. De Niro marries his dream girl, Lisa, they have two sons with one on the way and life's a dream for them until 9/11.

On September 11, 2001, De Niro's wife Lisa happened to be on one of the top floors of the North Tower of the World Trade Center that morning. Watching the Tower fall with his pregnant wife in it practically destroyed De Niro, but through an epiphany of faith, he decides to dedicate his life to protecting the citizens of the United States from enemies domestic and abroad. He purchases a lackluster counter-terrorism agency and renames it 'The Watchman Agency' after a passage he read in the Bible. From there the story has fast forwarded 10 years into the future – to this year, 2011.

Readers learn about the beginnings of The Watchman Agency, the people De Niro appoints to run it – all interesting men and women, but there's not a moment to lose because his new Agency becomes aware of a possible terrorist plot. The storyline transports readers between Arlington, VA, the home base of The Watchman, Las Vegas, NV, De Niro's new home, and places in Mexico and to a Native American reservation on the U.S./Mexican border near Nogales, AZ.

You'll learn about De Niro's incredible ranch, Estancia De Niro and his personal staff composed of very interesting folks – from the Argentinean Gaucho, Martin Fierro to his old, British gentleman butler, William Brett. You'll also learn about De Niro's two sons and a new person in his life, Dr. Moriah Stevens, a beautiful widow who also lost her husband on 9/11.

The story builds to a climatic ending but through it all, it remains a story and series about a man struggling to come to terms with his overwhelming grief and unending devotion to his wife.
Did anyone specific inspire your main character?
To me, Cris De Niro is a modern American Patriot, a self-made man from a tough neighborhood in NY. He's not a Special Ops guy or a CIA agent. He's a man whose wife and unborn son were brutally murdered by terrorists and instead of giving in to depression or acting out negatively with anger, he utilizes his faith to channel all of his rage and grief into something positive – protecting fellow Americans.

Message to bad guys: Never underestimate the average American … especially an Italian from Brooklyn!
How did you get the idea for The Watchmen of Ephraim?
My wife and I lost a dear friend on 9/11, Danny Afflitto. Danny's wife Stacey is one of my wife's closest friends. Danny was in the North Tower of the Trade Center when it fell. I was with his wife when he called moments after the plane hit the building. I will never forget Stacey's shock and anguish. They had one little boy, my oldest son's age, but she didn't even know at the time that she was pregnant with Danny and her second son … a son Danny will never know, nor will his sons ever know him … until the Kingdom.

That moment changed my life. Being half-Italian and coming from Brooklyn … I'm just not built to feel as totally helpless as I did that moment with Stacey, on that terrible day. Through my faith, I channeled my frustration and rage into my creative side … the result was The Watchman of Ephraim. Cris De Niro and his Agency do the things I can't do, but want to.
How do you keep track of your world building?
Low tech … with a copy of  TWOE  next to me. I use it for reference constantly.
What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
Well, I'm a newbie, so I don't have an extensive enough track record yet to make a valuable evaluation. But if I use my short data sample to project, I'd say eReaders have a growing and profound impact on the bottom line for authors. We generally make less per sale but each sale costs us very little. Because ePublished works remove many of the financial, technical, and logistical barriers-to-entry, they have both a positive and negative impact for both authors and readers. Readers can benefit from less expensive books but at the same time, electronic publishing has led to a flood of people publishing sub-par books. Couple that with a slow-down in the global economy, where so many people are out of work and you have a situation where the eBook universe is flooded with literary flotsam.

I've begun to personally champion a call for quality standards to be established in the self-publishing community. Readers deserve the ability to discriminate, when it comes to new authors and their works. Authors like me, who go to great efforts in order to publish only the very best literary works also want to be separated from the chaff, in the minds of readers. I believe only some type of quality standard can do that.
What are some of your favorite literary works?
Too many to even mention some – from Shakespeare to Jack London, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Steven Hunter, Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffin … and I've also enjoyed tons of pulp fiction from authors most don't know.
Who’s your favorite author?
W.E.B. Griffin. His 'The Corps' series remains my favorite reads. That series also inspired me more than any other to become a writer (Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is second).
Please share with us what can we expect from you next? Will there be a sequel?
I'm completing Signs of War as I write this. It's due out in September ('11). Then I'll immediately start work on the third book in the TWOE series. I have a rough outline for it completed already.

In keeping with Dean Wesley Smith's teachings that a writer should aim to publish three to four full-length novels per year, I'm gonna try like the dickens to get #3 out by December. If I can't, then I'll aim for January '12 and maybe publish four in 2012.

After #3 in The Watchman of Ephraim series, I might try to introduce a Fantasy/Adventure series that I originally intended to publish before TWOE called, Saga of the Seven Seals … but who knows.

Because I started advertising S7S a little to my following last year, I've gotten requests for it, so we'll see.
Do you have any upcoming appearances? If so where can our readers find you?
You can keep up with the rest of my TWOE PATRIOT Blog Tour (July 04 – September 11) at my website
Hope to connect with and hear from everyone, my links are below.

Deceived By The Others by Jess Haines!

Happy Release Day to Jess Haines!

In this third installment of Haines’ H&W Investigations series, readers are introduced to some of the more private, inner-workings of the were pack and their traditions.  In an effort to introduce Shiarra to his pack, and to see how she deals with a whole gaggle of shifted Weres during a full moon, Chaz takes Shia on a mini vacation way up in the Catskill Mountains. Hunter, New York is home to the Pine Cone Lodge, a shifter friendly (and shifter run) vacation spot, perfect for this late fall getaway…Mind you, Shia may not think of the Pine Cone Lodge as perfection by the end of the weekend!

As if the whole idea of hanging out with a bunch of shifted Weres wasn’t stressful enough, it takes no time at all for Shiarra to find out that not everyone in the Sunstrikers pack is excited for her to be there. From catty female pack mates to snarky punks hell bent on becoming alpha, there is no shortage of tension amongst the ranks. But, regardless of how scared shitless she really is, Shia takes whatever they can dish out with a bravery and determination that would make any sane person shake their head in awe and admiration.

I so totally DID NOT see that coming! ...

Ok. So in my review of Taken By The Others, (which can be found here), I made it no secret that I have a total girly crush on Alec Royce, but I never really mentioned what I thought of Chaz…It’s official! Chaz is a dick of epic proportions! As this is an early review, I’ll keep the details to a minimum, but let’s just say that Haines does one hell of a job foreshadowing in the previous two books of the series. In both Haunted By The Others and Taken By The Others, I always felt there was something slimy about Chaz. Granted, readers are told up-front how he lied to Shia about what he truly was; revealing well into their relationship (a physical one at that) about his true self. But still, readers are treated to Shiarra’s willingness to forgive Chaz for his transgressions and asked to move beyond this rather major issue. However, all through out both HBTO & TBTO, I continued to feel that there was something “off” with this relationship. While neither story really delves too deep into their reconciliation, whenever the reader was led to focus on this relationship, there was an ever present feeling of mistrust and even mild disgust for Chaz.

As with the previous two books, Haines presents readers with a wild, tension filled adventure from start to finish. With solid foundations already established in the previous two books, Haines carries on the adventures of Shiarra Waynest with vividly described settings, a perfectly balanced cast of characters, and one hell of a kick azz protagonist whose believable personality and willingness to admit fear will have readers identifying with her and feeling as if they are experiencing this adventure right along side Shia.

In closing, Jess Haines finally gives us “pro Alec Royce” types a sneak peak of what is to come…can we say squeeeeeeeeeee! Me thinks Shia is in for some pretty exciting new adventures and I am definitely signed on for the ride!

Kudos to you, Jess! Your H&W Investigations series has a permanent place on my shelf and I am certain Deceived By The Others will be at the top of many "favorites" lists for 2011!

They’re here, and they’re real…werewolves, vampires, mages, and other creatures of the night. For New York P.I. Shiarra Waynest, taking care of Others business started out as a way to stay solvent. But now business is getting very, very complicated…

Shiarra’s relationship with sexy werewolf Chaz may be somewhat unconventional. Still, after a few bumps, Shia is finally ready to get serious. That means meeting family—or in this case, bringing Chaz’s entire werewolf pack along for a rollicking full-moon weekend in the Catskills.

Soon after they arrive, threatening notes appear, warning Chaz to go home. Then their cabin is ransacked. Shia starts digging to find out whether it’s the work of upstart teenaged werewolves or something more sinister. Yet as rumors about her vampire connections arouse the pack’s hostility, Shia has to contend with other dangers. Not just from an adversary about to make his fatal intentions known, but from a threat that’s even closer than she knows…
