In When Blood Calls, J.K. Beck introduces readers to a new twist to the vampire story that is sure to please many a reader. With steamy sex scenes, brutal slayings, brilliant mystery, and even a bit of quirky comedy, Beck has hit the ground running with this “First in Series” release.

From page one, Beck’s talent for the genre is obvious. Readers are sure to find an exciting, action packed story line which has been very clearly laid out. There’s no muss, no fuss and the progression of the story is quick, clean, and easily followed.

Beck’s ability to describe both the physical and emotional setting allows the reader to immerse themselves with in the pages. This particular reader (lol, me) thrives on being able to “view” the story like a film strip inside my head and found no trouble picturing the scenes and emotions as the story progressed. There is one particular scene that I found quite impressive. In an effort to portray to the fearsome lunacy of one of the villains, Beck has so perfectly described the character’s sick and twisted mind that it sent chills up my spine and “goosebumples” down to my toes!!

With hot sex, murder, suspense, and mystery, When Blood Calls is a brilliant kick off to what promises to be a great new series!

Ok then! All set? Let's get started! Hi Lila! Thank you for allowing YzhaBella's BookShelf the honour of this interview! I've had the pleasure of reading Awakened by a Kiss and loved every word of it!

Here we go!

Can you share a few tid bits about yourself?

I’m a married to a wonderful man, have three totally lovable -- when they’re not bickering -- children. Formerly a law clerk in Canada, I worked in a high-end law firm and specialized in litigation. I quit after having my first child. I wanted to pursue my true passion – writing. Now I feel as though I have the best job in the world. I’m doing what I love. I’m an author of steamy historical romance novels with Penguin/Berkley. And I get to share my love stories with readers.

Can you tell us a bit about how you came to decide on retelling classic fairy tales for your debut?

I love fairy tales and the history geek in me completely fell in love with the time period when fairy tales like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty were written. Seventeenth century France was as elegant and refined as Regency England. It was such a deliciously salacious time, it made it easy to give the tales a steamy spin. Louis XIV was a lusty King. His courtiers, like their King, were connoisseurs of the carnal arts. Setting the book in this very time and place where the genre of fairy tales was born seemed fitting. We have French lawyer/writer Charles Perrault to thank for those fairy tales that are near and dear to our hearts. He was the first to write down folklore and put morals to his stories. He was the creator of The Tales of Mother Goose. And AWAKENED BY A KISS is based on three of his famous fairy tales, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots.

Why these three, in particular?

The idea of doing a role reverse for Sleeping Beauty came to me first. I had Adrien d’Aspe so clearly in my mind -- the illegitimate son of the King and a seasoned roué. Louis XIV had had a number of illegitimate children in his lifetime. He legitimized them and they were treated like royalty. That would make Adrien as close to a prince as one could get! And a perfect Sleeping Beau! Especially after I have the heroine, Catherine, sneak into his rooms and awaken him with a sensuous kiss.

As I wrote Sleeping Beau, the story of Little Red Writing was suddenly born. Nicolas and Anne took shape in my mind. And as I wrote Little Red Writing, Bewitching in Boots with its characters and twists popped into my head.

I don’t think I chose these fairy tales. They sort of chose me.

Of the three tales told in Awakened by a Kiss, which is your favorite? And, who were your favorite leading lady and gentleman?

Honestly, I love each story equally and for different reasons. In Sleeping Beau, I just adore bad boy Adrien d’Aspe. He’s had complete control over his emotions and his affairs with women. That is until Catherine comes along and rocks his world, in more ways than one. I adore Nicolas and Anne in Little Red Writing. Anne is a writer and passionate about her books. I love how she completely unravels strong, ambitious Nicolas. As for Bewitching in Boots, Elisabeth is smart and loyal to those she loves, and hopelessly in love with Tristan. Not the kind of woman to sit back and wait for a man to make his moves, she takes matters into her own hands. The sexy commander of the King’s private Guard has met his match!

Lol. Which is your husband’s favorite?

LOL….It’s no secret that my husband reads my work. He’s a huge supporter of my writing and one of my biggest cheerleaders. With each Fiery Tale he’s read, he’s sincerely expressed that they’ve become tied for first place in his list of favorites. :)

You quote Charles Perrault, both as an introductory “Historical tidbit” and as an opening to each of your three stories. How much research did you do while writing Awakened by a Kiss?

Because I had done a lot of reading about 17th century France – strictly for pleasure – prior to writing AWAKENED BY A KISS, I had a good foundation of knowledge before starting the book. I’ve also been to France twice and have visited many 17th c. chateaus, including the Palace of Versailles. I’ve walked through many French gardens as well. Occasionally, as I write, there are things that come up that need further research. But I never mind that. I love researching history and making the book as historically accurate as possible.

Are there any brow raising “quirky” and/or interesting facts about Louis XIV that you found during your research?

Oh wow, are there ever! Great question! The Louis XIV was absolutely fascinating and full of quirks. He spent his days strolling about his vast gardens at Versailles – his throng of courtiers and violinists following him around – because he felt it was unhealthy to be indoors. He adored women, and loved sex. It’s been said that he had sex up to twice a day into his seventies! He felt as King, he had the right to have any woman he wanted, married or not. He hated convents because he felt that a woman shouldn’t be shut away like that. After all, women were placed on earth for a man’s pleasure, right?

It was his second wife, Madame de Maintenon, who managed to curb his vice-ridden ways. She convinced the aging King to stop his womanizing and live a more pious life. The problem was, this pious woman’s plan to make the King a better man backfired on her. The King may have relinquished his womanizing, but he still had a libido that wouldn’t quit. And, as his wife, she was now the sole focus of his carnal attention. She was to take care of all his sexual needs.

Whenever the urge would hit him, the King would summon his wife (who was two years older than him) outdoors. Image how thrilled she must have been, in her sixties, being summoned out of prayer to the gardens of Versailles – once or twice a day – only to be asked to step around the bushes, and hike up her skirts for His Majesty’s pleasure while courtiers stood nearby. (Luckily for her, he never took very long with her). Once the King was done, a red-faced Madame de Maintenon would have to walk past the mass of courtiers, who were softly snickering and doing a poor job pretending they didn’t know what just happened, in order to return to the palace.

There are actual letters that have survived where Madame de Maintenon asked for the Church’s permission to deny the King sex. She felt that since the Church considered sex to be for purposes of procreation, and she was well past the age to provide the King with any children, she and the King shouldn’t indulge in sex any longer.

Unfortunately for her, she didn’t get the Church’s blessing to deny the King. Rather, the letter in response encouraged her to attend to her husband’s needs as it kept the King from indulging in extra-marital affairs, keeping him from “sin”.

When the King died at age 76, she wrote a letter to her cousin stating, “Oh what a martyrdom I have endured!”

What are some of your favorite literary works?

I adore Christmas, and Charles Dickens’s, A CHRISTMAS CAROL has always been a favorite of mine. Also, I love works by Jane Austen and Alexandre Dumas.

Who’s your favorite author?

I don’t have a favorite author but several favorites! I love Lisa Kleypas, Cheryl Holt, Elizabeth Hoyt and Kathryn Smith, Loretta Chase to name a few.

Please share with us what can we expect from you next? Will there be a sequel?

On November 2nd, 2010, THE PRINCESS IN HIS BED hits the shelves! Another collection of Fiery Tales! Three classic fairy tales, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Princess and the Pea are scandalously retold and renamed, The Lovely Duckling, The Marquis’ New Clothes, and The Princess and the Diamonds.

Plus, a full-length Fiery Tales will be released 2011! Tentative date is October. It will be based on a single classic fairy tale -- the most beloved fairy tale of them all! Cinderella! It’s going to be steamy and romantic and retold as it’s never been done before!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Because I’m a debut historical romance author, readers don’t know what to expect from my books. Though the characters and settings might differ from book to book, in a Lila DiPasqua novel you can always expect to find a sinfully seductive rake, a strong smart heroine who will make him lose his heart and scorching-hot love scenes that will leave you breathless.
