Blog Tour Review: Everblue by Brenda Pandos

As a huge fan of Brenda PandosTalisman Series, I was ecstatic to be given the opportunity read/review this great new story and to participate in the blog tour hosted by Eleni, of La Femme Readers.  Thanks ladies!

With not much more than “Splash” as a reference, I wasn’t entirely certain I’d understand enough about mermaids to truly enjoy Everblue to the level it deserves. But having enjoyed other stories by Brenda, I figured satisfaction was most likely a certainty!  YA readers will not be disappointed! Woot, Woot!

Ashlyn and Tatiana have been the closest of friends for years.  A senior in high school, Ash shares the ho hum of the day’s gossip with Tachi who soaks it all up with an exuberance only a home-schooled, sheltered teen would exhibit. Boys, fashions, he said this and she said that. It’s all the same daily drab crap to Ash but to Tachi, it’s a connection to mainstream life that she grabs on to with both hands. Although limited in the amount of time they can spend together, both share a devotion to their friendship that is sure to last through the years, both counting down the days until their pending escape to college.

And then there’s Fin. Drop dead gorgeous and always polite yet distant, Tachi’s brother is a mystery to Ash and he held her young heart since the day they all met.  The three of them used to be inseparable, then Fin started becoming more and more distant and any interactions Ash and Fin did have had become awkward and confusing. How could she want someone so badly who appeared to want to stay so far away from her?

There’s something about the Helton family that Ash doesn’t quite understand. There’s mystery in their sheltered existence and when they disappear without a word, she becomes extremely concerned for their safety and dangerously depressed with the disconnection from her closest and dearest friend.  Is she hurt? Has something happened to the entire family?  Will they every return?

As I’ve mentioned many times in previous reviews, I dive into a story and become so immersed that the words instantly translate into pictures like a filmstrip running through my imagination and for readers such as myself, character, setting and situation description is of the utmost importance.  As a whole, Everblue did not disappoint. Pandos has talent for creating a great cast of characters and bringing her settings to life.  My only regret is that we didn’t get a more in-depth education on Natatoria and the history of the Helton family.

Use of the dual point of view narration lends a complexity which I had initially feared would become confusing; potentially blurring the lines and making the plot hard to follow. Fortunately, this was not the case. Brenda Pandos does a great job of guiding the reader and ensuring smooth transitions between the two points of view.

With Everblue, Brenda Pandos presents wonderfully imaginative world building, well rounded character development and a perfect timing for establishing conflict, which all helps to create a treasure of a tale that proves her talent and will do much to further establish her footing in this highly competitive industry. It’s no secret that I am a fan of Brenda’s stories and I highly admire the growth she has shown since her debut in 2010. Way to go Brenda!

Rootin’ for Alec Royce! Hands off ladies! He’s ALL MINE!

(Repost: Originally posted as a guest blog for Stella at Exlibris as a participant in the Spotlight on H&W Investigations series by Jess Haines)

He’s suave and debonair, calculating and fierce. One of the eldest vampires in the USA, Alec Royce has wealth and power beyond measure. With narrow minded determination and a façade which makes him seem utterly lacking in compassion or empathy, Alec is not someone you want to be messing with…well, then again…

I’ve made it no secret, I got’s a big ‘ol girly crush on Alec Royce! Haines may have set out to make us all think he’s a terd, but this reader can read between the lines!  With a prominent role in Hunted By The Others and Taken By The Others, Alec will leave the ladies gushing while we’re all still trying to determine if he’s really the grouchy bad azz bad boy he seems or if it is all just an act.

In my review of Taken By The Others (found here), I mentioned my penchant for Alec Royce and that regardless of how Jess Haines has describe my Mr. Yummy, I’ve had a definite “picture” of what Mr. Alec Royce, “Bad Boy, Ancient Elder Vampire Extraordinaire” would look like. As with many an avid reader, when I read a book my brain “pictures” the words like a filmstrip and from word one, I’ve been feasting my “eyes” on this loverly, luscious hunk of a man!...(sorry, ‘scuse the drool!)

To take an excerpt from my TBTO review:  Nummy Nummy! It’s Alexander Skarsgård better known as Eric Northman from HBO’s True Blood Series! He’s HOT, and dangerous, egotistical and powerful, conniving and one of the most powerful members of the vampire community…who owns a night club! Oh, and have I already mentioned that he’s really d*m*ed HOT! (*fans self profusely just thinking about that hot muscular sexy “wanna gobble him up” body)

*Sigh*, cough, cough. Anywho, let’s get on with it shall we?

Haines has left no doubt that Alec is a powerful force to be reckoned with.  I think there are still plenty of nummy tid bits we have yet to learn about Mr. Royce and I honestly don’t think anyone will be disappointed at what lies beneath the surface!

Sadly, Alec was not a huge part of Deceived By The Others, but Haines did see fit to leave us with a closing that will leave this reader daydreaming of what is to come. I have a very good idea that H&W Investigations Book 4 is finally taking this series in the romantic direction that I’ve been rooting for all along! I could be wrong but hey, a girl can fantasize can’t she?  The anticipation of this particular discovery will be one very hard to reign in while waiting for the next installment!

In case I haven’t been clear, (Lmao, yeah right!) I am a huge fan of Jess Haines and her H&W Investigations urban fantasy series and for all you ladies who haven’t started this adventure yet, what the heck are you all waiting for! Run out and grab all three books as soon as you can! I bet you won’t be disappointed!

They are the Others—the vampires, mages, and werewolves once thought to exist only in our imaginations. Now they’re stepping out of the shadows, and nothing in our world will ever be the same again…

In a Town Like This, Being A P.I. Can Be Murder

Shiarra Waynest’s detective work was dangerous enough when her client base was strictly mortal. But ailing finances have forced her to accept a lucrative case that could save her firm—if it doesn’t kill her first. Shiarra has signed on to work for a high-level mage to recover an ancient artifact owned by one of New York’s most powerful vampires.

As soon as Shiarra meets sexy, mesmerizing vamp Alec Royce, she knows her assignment is even more complicated than she thought. With a clandestine anti-Other group trying to recruit her, and magi being eliminated, Shiarra needs back-up and enlists her ex-boyfriend—a werewolf whose non-furry form is disarmingly appealing—and a nerdy mage with surprising talents. But it may not be enough. In a city where the undead roam, magic rules, and even the Others aren’t always what they seem, Shiarra has just become the secret weapon in a battle between good and evil—whether she likes it or not…

The only thing Max Carlyle and Alec Royce agree on is that they both want Shia–for very different reasons.

Max is determined to destroy Shia for killing his progeny, while Royce’s interest is a lot more personal. That’s not sitting well with Shia’s werewolf boyfriend, Chaz. As the feud between Max and Royce gets ever more deadly, a powerful vampire-hunting faction is urging Shia to join their side. Shia has always believed vamps were the bad guys, but she’s discovering unexpected shades of grey that are about to redefine her friends, her loyalties–and even her desires…

They’re here, and they’re real…werewolves, vampires, mages, and other creatures of the night. For New York P.I. Shiarra Waynest, taking care of Others business started out as a way to stay solvent. But now business is getting very, very complicated…

Shiarra’s relationship with sexy werewolf Chaz may be somewhat unconventional. Still, after a few bumps, Shia is finally ready to get serious. That means meeting family—or in this case, bringing Chaz’s entire werewolf pack along for a rollicking full-moon weekend in the Catskills.

Soon after they arrive, threatening notes appear, warning Chaz to go home. Then their cabin is ransacked. Shia starts digging to find out whether it’s the work of upstart teenaged werewolves or something more sinister. Yet as rumors about her vampire connections arouse the pack’s hostility, Shia has to contend with other dangers. Not just from an adversary about to make his fatal intentions known, but from a threat that’s even closer than she knows…

Blog Tour Review: Under A Fairy Moon by T.M. Wallace

(Under A Fairy Moon is intended for a young reader and, as the parent of a tween, I can only comment from the perspective of a mom.)

T.M. Wallace will treat readers to a wonderfully imaginative and mystical adventure full of fantastical new friends and unabashedly devious new foes.  Intended for a middle grade audience, Under A Fairy Moon will stretch your tweens imagination on a journey of perseverance and courage.  Adult readers will also find a pleasantly delightful reading experience.

Both intrigued and somewhat fearful of the mysteries that lurk in her neighbor’s garden, Addy daydreams of the possible adventures that await any who would brave Mrs. Tavish’s wrath to enter and explore.  Some say Mrs. Tavish is a witch, even going so far as to say she eats little boys for breakfast!  Determined to heed her imagination's insistence to explore the wonders of the garden, Addy confidently enters her “Royal Egyptian Courtyard”, to be greeted by her “green-cloaked sentries ready to escort her through the flowerbeds”(A). All too soon, Addy realizes Mrs. Tavish’s garden is much more that she could have ever imagined...and much more dangerous than she could have ever guessed possible!

Over all, I truly enjoyed this adventure as T.M. Wallace presents a magic filled tale with very thorough descriptions of both characters and settings.  Unfortunately, I found the foundation and world building to be a little on the light side. Readers of all ages may find that a little “more” in these two areas would have avoided some confusion. Additionally, during Addy’s adventures, she looses time as a result of the various foes and their trickery, an element which results in somewhat abrupt changes in course which may be hard for the young reader to adjust to. Even so, Under A Fairy Moon is a fantastical adventure sure to please readers of all ages!

Addy Marten sets out to explore her new neighbour's beautiful garden, and especially the rows of mysterious stone statues that she has glimpsed through her bedroom window. Instead of the enticing hideaway she has imagined, however, she finds herself trapped in the Median Realms, and an unwilling pawn in a game of Fairy Chess. She must use all her courage and wits to win the game and free herself from malicious fairy creatures and their twisted fairy-tale world.

Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill

Oh. My. God! Nooooo! Tell me it isn’t so!...

At the conclusion of Hard Bitten, I totally felt like I had been smacked up side the head with a baseball bat ‘cause I sure as heck didn’t see that one coming! Ms. Neill, you made me cry! “Why? Why? Why?” I love your stories and your talent for sharing a riveting reading experience keeps me coming back for more, but for a few minutes I absolutely DESPISED YOU! Of course, the feeling was fleeting and, with out a doubt, I’ll be gobbling up more of your adventures, but dang it! I was so engrossed in the story, so utterly on edge and waiting for “it” to finally happen that I couldn’t help but become completely furious at this cruel twist of fate!

Well, ladies and gents! It’s a grand slam for Neill with this 4th installment of the Chicagoland Vampire series! The adventure continues with twists and turns that will keep your head a spinning, your heart fluttering, and your voices cheering on Merit’s success to the very end!

Having reviewed the previous three installments (links below), I find it hard not to repeat myself in respect to my admiration for Chloe Neill’s stupendous writing abilities. With solid world building, extremely effective character development and one hell of an adventure, Neill continues to treat readers to an exciting tale of growth, determination, bravery and, of course, torturous romance!

Merit is one of my most favorite urban fantasy characters. She’s sassy, determined, intelligent and brave. With strength of character that many could only aspire to achieve, Merit has learned to take the unfortunate events of her recent life and make the best of them. Yes, she was turned against her will, forced into a lifestyle she didn’t ask for, and assigned one of the most difficult (yet highly respected) house positions to be had, yet she continuously takes it all in stride and with a fierce determination to do what’s right and make right the wrong’s against the house.

Review: Changeling Dream by Dani Harper

Oh James! Such a lost and tortured soul! Running from the past, head-on into a future he has never imagined! After losing his wife (and almost himself) to murder, James has forsaken his human self to run with the wolves. For decades, he has confined himself to a world of intellectual simplicity and a total lack of human emotion. So deeply immersed in the wild, it’s uncertain whether those of his family will ever see James in his human skin again.

Fresh out of college, all alone, broke and desperately seeking the future she’s been dreaming about, Jillian Deshcarme figures she’s got nothing to lose when she agrees to move half way across the country to Northern Alberta. Little did Jillian know, she’s just set out on the adventure of a lifetime; headed on a straight path into the unexpected and about to learn so much more about herself, and the world around her, than she has ever imagined possible. Though broken and still on the mend from a tragic event, Jillian’s soul is not yet shattered.  A sheer determination to move beyond her misfortune leaves her with an extraordinary strength of will and character that many could only dream of achieving.  Oh, she still has the scars, both physical and emotional, but Jillian also has a selflessness, compassion, and intense work ethic that makes her the perfect fit to help those who need it at Dunvegan’s Veterinary Clinic.  Even the stray that so unexpectedly turns up…

Readers will adore the people of Dunvegan and root for James and Jillian at every turn.  In my recent review of Changeling Moon (found here), I commented on Harper’s writing abilities and with this second installment in the Changeling Series, Dani does not disappoint.  Once again, readers will encounter a realistic and endearing cast of characters from within a super exciting reading adventure that will leave you fully satisfied.

While Changeling Dream differs in that the romance between the protagonists is not the center piece but rather a significant contribution, the romantic encounters are just as hot and exciting and the emotions will still set your heart to fluttering, just the same. To further explain, while Changeling Moon was mostly focused on the development of a relationship between Zoey and Connor, I feel the centerpiece of Changeling Dream was James’ difficult and emotional journey and his developing relationship with Jillian, a significant and powerful contribution to the whole.

Harper’s talent will keep readers intrigued, excited and content while her passion for the paranormal and an impressively vivid imagination will keep readers coming back for more. It’s time to make some space and clear the dust because I guarantee many will find the Changeling Series worthy of the highly coveted real estate on the “keeper” shelf!
