My Synopsis
Meena, resident of the BIG City and screen writer, thought her life was ok. Nothing too spectacular... unless you consider the fact that with one look into your eyes, she can tell you when and how you are going to die. You see, Meena has a very unique form of precognition. This “gift” has always made her feel like a freak and for years she has had to endure vicious name calling and rejection by her peers. If you were to ask Meena directly, she’d say this ability was a curse, not a gift.
All Meena truly ever wanted was to become head writer for Insatiable, one of the country’s longest running, and still most popular, soap operas. With the new pitch she’s cooked up, she is certain the promotion is in the bag! Imagine her surprise when not only does Soshana (typical corporate airhead) get the promotion, she’s got big plans for introducing a vampire angle into the Insatiable story line. Vampires? Seriously? Talk about jumping on the bandwagon! UGH! According to Meena, vampires are nothing but mythological misogynistic monsters and she is SO not on board with this entire idea. There goes the show, and there goes any hopes Meena had of capturing the coveted Head Writers position.
But, why vampires? And why Shoshanna? Up until now, Shoshana has never even been in the office long enough to handle the work she had, let alone the workload involved with a Head position. As it is, Meena is forever completing and submitting Shoshana’s work. So what gives? Regardless, Meena has devised a plan to counteract Shoshana’s pitch. She’s going to write in a “princely” vampire slayer to sweep the leading lady off her feet and save the day! And, Meena has the perfect man in mind of who she feels she can draw great reference from to create the prefect character!
Lucien Antonescue is Meena’s very own prince who’s “swept in” and “saved the day”…err, night rather! He’s dashing, debonair, and outrageously hot! Not only can Meena NOT see his death (which is weird, but is also a refreshing break from the usual), but he actually saved Meena from a vicious attack by a colony of bats! Lucien is Meena’s “dreamboy”. He’s all she’s ever wanted in a man. There’s nothing more she could want from a lover. Heck, she’s even considering moving to Romania just to stay close to him...Too bad her precognitive talents don’t work on her own future. It might have saved her from nightmare and heartache!
My Thoughts
Readers will be kept thoroughly intrigued by each turn of events and may even find themselves flipping back through the pages for clarifications and asking themselves “How did I miss that”!
Insatiable, quite interestingly, references a few historical figures, both real and mythological, on a level that nicely adds to the plot line, and are also clearly conveyed so that even those who are not “up to speed” can grasp the intended purpose of the reference.
From Joan of Arc to Dracula, Insatiable has many interesting twists and takes that will keep readers on their toes. In fact, there’s one particular event, or twist rather, that really took this reader by surprise! End result, very cool!
In closing, I would like to take a moment to mention that this I am not entirely certain I liked the way the story left off. Yet again, I’m also not entirely certain that I didn’t. Hmm…I am a wee bit conflicted on this point (lol, obviously) and can only hope this will be remedied soon! (Sequel currently set to be released 2011)
From the Publisher
Sick of hearing about vampires? So is Meena Harper.
But her bosses are making her write about them anyway, even though Meena doesn't believe in them.
Not that Meena isn't familiar with the supernatural. See, Meena Harper knows how you're going to die. (Not that you're going to believe her. No one ever does.)
But not even Meena's precognition can prepare her for what happens when she meets—then makes the mistake of falling in love with—Lucien Antonescu, a modern-day prince with a bit of a dark side. It's a dark side a lot of people, like an ancient society of vampire hunters, would prefer to see him dead for.
The problem is, Lucien's already dead. Maybe that's why he's the first guy Meena's ever met whom she could see herself having a future with. See, while Meena's always been able to see everyone elses future, she's never been able look into her own.
And while Lucien seems like everything Meena has ever dreamed of in a boyfriend, he might turn out to be more like a nightmare.
Now might be a good time for Meena to start learning to predict her own future. . . .
If she even has one.
A deliciously twisted modern-day sequel to Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula.
